About Scissor Wing Transport

The Estes Scissor Wing Transport was first introduced in the 1974 catalog. It remained in the catalog until 1985. In 2005 it re-appeared again and stayed until 2008. It featured an internal pop pod that was ejected at engine burn out which released the wing to transition from boost to glide configuration. The Scissor Wing Transport was released as 1265 and had an introductory price of $5.50. It was originally designed by Bill Simon, Ed Brown and Wayne Kellner.

The Semroc Reproduction Scissor Wing Transport is very close to the original with some modern changes. The original balsa nose cone is kept. All fins are precision laser-cut balsa with slots located to allow parts to come together perfectly straight and in the proper location. The Wing pivot has been re-engineered and is being made from Basswood so as to be more rugged than it’s Plastic predecessor. We have also upgraded to beefier body tubes. A special thanks to Jay Berry and Phil Queen for the awesome re-engineering.

This kit is generally of the high quality that I have come to expect from Semroc; especially the quality of the materials. I found the jigs helpful to maintain some of alignment. I did have a couple of issues. Step 1 -If the intention is for the thrust block to be even with the BT, then the spacing of the thrust block should be 3/8", not 1/2" as instructed. Step 16 - The tabs on the jig folded down, not up, as in the picture. To get them to fold up, the jig would have to have been turned over during the laser cutting process and these lines would be cut on the opposite side of all the other lines on the jig. The picture of the jig is different in steps 16 and 17. Step 21 - the instructions state "...so that these parts do not stand too proud". I suggest revising this to say "these parts should be approximately 1/16" above the main wing pivot. Step 24 - Both parts with the hole in the middle broke immediately upon separation from the balsa sheet. I suspect that the laser cutter was for the scribed lines was set on "cut". Alignment on this model is critical, the marking template appears to be slightly inaccurate. Wrap-around templates are probably very hard to get exactly right due to reproduction errors (making copies). Because of this, the wing did not swing out exactly perpendicular to the BT. I found it extremely challenging to shim the slots in the pivot plate to get proper alignment. Some of these issues can be found in the Rocketry Forum. The build is complete. I have not trimmed the glider nor launched it yet. I hope that this review will help improve the model to make constuction easier. It is not an easy build.

    A perfect kit

This kit seemed difficult at first reading through the instructions, but once I started plugging away, it went together quite quickly and all the laser cut pieces fit like a glove. I am impressed with the tube quality and the parts are top notch. I cannot wait to get the paint and decals on this baby and make it to the club field. I'm seriously considering making another one soon. I haven't enjoyed making a kit in awhile and this kit and instructions made my experience easy and relaxing.
